چکیده

Periventricular hemorrhagic infarct (PVHI) is among the most devastating injuries suffered by prematurely born infants. In PVHI (formerly called Grade 4 intraventricular hemorrhage), an intraventricular vein that drains smaller veins from the surrounding white matter is occluded, resulting in venous infarction with hemorrhage [1]. DTI has become a useful imaging technique to identify maturational trends reflecting microstructural changes in white matter (WM) & gray matter (GM) of the developing brain [2-4] and has been shown to detect microstructural injury, even in normal appearing neonatal WM [5]. However, there have been no reports of abnormal microstructural maturation in GM with DTI. Furthermore, there have been no prior DTI studies of PVHI. In this study, we hypothesize that, in prematurely born neonates with PVHI, DTI would be able to detect abnormal microstructural development in WM and GM that appear normal on conventional T1weighted and T2-weighted MR imaging. Evaluation of White Matter Tracts in Autistic Individuals: A Review of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Studies

Introduction: Many cognitive and social deficits in autism are caused by abnormal functional connections between brain networks, which are manifested by impaired integrity of white matter tracts. White matter tracts are like the "highways" of the brain, which allow fast and efficient communication in different areas of the brain. The purpose of this article is to review the results of autism st...

The Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery

Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...

Gray Matter Atrophy Is Primarily Related to Demyelination of Lesions in Multiple Sclerosis: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging MRI Study

Objective: Cortical pathology, periventricular demyelination, and lesion formation in multiple sclerosis (MS) are related (Hypothesis 1). Factors in the cerebrospinal fluid close to these compartments could possibly drive the parallel processes. Alternatively, the cortical atrophy could be caused by remote axonal transection (Hypothesis 2). Since MRI can differentiate between demyelination and ...

Prenatal and neonatal brain structure and white matter maturation in children at high risk for schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE Schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with abnormalities of brain structure and white matter, although little is known about when these abnormalities arise. This study was conducted to identify structural brain abnormalities in the prenatal and neonatal periods associated with genetic risk for schizophrenia. METHOD Prenatal ultrasound scans and neonatal structura...

White and gray matter development in human fetal, newborn and pediatric brains.

Brain anatomy is characterized by dramatic growth from the end of the second trimester through the neonatal stage. The characterization of normal axonal growth of the white matter tracts has not been well-documented to date and could provide important clues to understanding the extensive inhomogeneity of white matter injuries in cerebral palsy (CP) patients. However, anatomical studies of human...
